If you have never heard of NF and are finding it difficult to understand the challenges many children face when it comes to learning and development, you may feel overwhelmed about how best to support them in the classroom.
Up to 80% of children with nf1 have learning and behavioural difficulties
While children impacted by NF2 do not have learning difficulties in the same way children with NF1 do, they may still require assistance due to issues with vision, hearing and mobility.
To assist teachers in supporting children, we have developed resources outlining some of the challenges children may face, along with strategies on how best to support them.

The NF Hero by Lana Melbourne
Created by one of our very own community members to help explain NF to her young son this is a great way to explain what’s happening to a child in an age appropriate way.
The book is a great resource for the school library and can be read to a class.

Being different is not always easy and it is not always fair, but with your support we can help level the playing field and reduce incidence of bullying by educating kids on what it means to live with NF – all while raising money for the Children’s Tumour Foundation.
Some simple ways to get your school involved
- Dress in Blue or Green for a gold coin donation
- Include a presentation at the next school assembly (we recommend working in collaboration with the child and their parents/carers to ensure it is sensitive to their individual needs)
- Hold a Lolly Jar Guessing Competition (why now use blue and green lollies for a bit of fun?)
- Host a debating competition around bullying or celebrating differences.
