NF Connect - Parents Perspective

NF Connect - What can your child and you expect?

Written by NF Parent - Michelle

Our daughter, Alyssa, really enjoys attending the NF Connect for Teens and Young Adults every month, it's something she really looks forward to.

She is comfortable talking with everybody because the other attendees can relate to how NF impacts her life. From their own experience they can genuinely answer questions that us as parents may not be able to relate to or answer. From what I have seen and heard from my daughter all the other teens and young adults with NF offer each other support on a range of topics, including having an MRI, being in hospital, what they are doing at school or their hobbies and interests. It’s not all just talk about NF though, there seems to be lots of conversations about a whole range of topics.

The CTF support coordinators also participate in these Zoom sessions and are there to guide conversations and help when and if it’s needed.

I have also participated in the Parent and Carer’s NF Connect Zoom sessions and have found them to be valuable. It’s helpful to talk with other parents and have support/feedback from the CTF coordinators.

By having these sessions via Zoom it gives people from around Australia the chance to be connected and to come together and talk with people they might never have had the opportunity to meet. As a mum from Tasmania, it’s been really nice to talk with parents and hear their experiences while also sharing my own knowledge. There are not many spaces where you can talk about NF with people who really understand the impacts it can have on a family. So I’ve found it to be a valuable experience.
