2023 Australian NF Clinical Symposium Wrap Up

2023 Australian Neurofibromatosis Clinical Symposium

At this year's Neurofibromatosis Clinical Symposium, we welcomed more than 100 delegates (in-person and online) to the Perpetual offices in Sydney to collaborate, learn and share their knowledge and experience.

With the support of our medical advisory panel and symposium organising committee, we curated a program that was both informative and insightful, opening up the dialogue around surveillance and management of symptoms; service delivery, medical research and the most recent treatments.

Australia's leading clinicians and researchers shared their knowledge of NF in a mix of lightning talks, panel discussions and plenaries.

We were fortunate to have our international speaker, Prof Jaishri Blakeley from the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Centre, Baltimore US. A clinician scientists with research expertise in the development of clinical trials for nervous system tumours, and specifically early clinical-translational studies.

Prof Blakeley, cofounded the Neurofibromatosis Therapeutic Acceleration Program (NTAP) to shift the landscape of NF1 clinical care. NTAP focuses on therapeutics, fosters collaboration, facilitates open and timely sharing of results and streamlines the research process to accelerate therapies.

It is in this spirit of collaboration that much of the day progressed.

A panel of clinicians from across WA, SA, QLD, NSW and VIC shared the current NF models of care in place, the challenges faced and strategies that work in NF service delivery. The discussion continued with consideration of solutions to address identified challenges, potential collaborations, and how to leverage existing resources to optimise care delivery for NF across Australia.

In the following weeks, the support services team will distill some of their presentations to share with the NF Community.

We are looking forward to next year already and we’re excited about the commitment of every person in the room who is working towards creating better treatments and outcomes for every person living with NF.

Huge thank you to our gold sponsors Whiteley and Alexion, venue partners at Perpetual and The Card Network.
